Who We Are
Welcome to Our Community

OUR HISTORY, OUR HERITAGE

Below is a brief of our history, our heritage.

We are a group of Malawi heritage residing in the United Kingdom that share the Adventist faith. We are the sons and daughters of our motherland, Malawi – The Warm Heart of Africa! Malawi is one small Southern African nation that was once a British protectorate till 1964.

As a people with a common background and heritage – we strive to embrace each other as one Malawian family. Our mission is to empower and inspire each other, and those around us, through faith, love, and service. Since our insertion, we have and continues to grow from strength-to-strength in body and soul. We regularly meet – both in physical and virtual forms – for prayers and moral support.

Whether you join our vibrant Women’s Ministry, engage with the Youth Ministries, or participate in our dynamic Prayer Ministry, or join our sister bodies, there’s a place for you to fully engage and interact to make a difference. We believe in the power of community and the importance of every individual as unique being. Join us as we grow spiritually, support one another, and make a positive long-lasting impact together. We look forward to walking this journey of faith with you! Welcome aboard!

“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” – John 3:16 (NKJV)

Our Mission

1 - Fellowship

The Malawian Adventists in UK (MAU) body exists to promote Fellowship among Malawians in the UK.

img 8822 53055680989 o

2 - Promotion of Malawi Culture & Traditions

MAU exists to share and enjoy Malawian Culture while here in the UK and pass on cultural and traditional fundamentals to our diaspora children.

3 - Evangelism

MAU exists to make Christ known among Malawians and other communities in the UK and beyond. Importantly, MAU exists to support evangelist activities in Malawi and globally.

What We Do

01.

We Find and Support Each Other

Since its establishment over 15 years ago, MAU Members have actively and gracefully find and locate other compatriots. We do this to provide emotional safety net, crucial practical guidance, and preserve connection to our cultural heritage. This shared network has acted as a bridge to overcome the isolation of living in diaspora.

02.

We Build Network Connections

MAU members strive to build immediate and lasting networks of the Malawi heritage. It is most challenging to settle in a foreign land and this has proven vital for the new entrants into the British Island.

03.

We Strengthen & Uphold Each Other

The importance of this cannot be overstated. For many Malawian compatriots, it has become an essential source of support for both survival and mental well-being. It has served as an anchor against isolation, providing a vital and enduring safe space to navigate culture shock while fostering a dependable network of mutual support and connection.

04.

We Support Mission & Evangelism Work in Malawi

When MAU was established, little did we know that we will be just another force to assist advancing the cause and work of God in Malawi. However, as time went by, we realised that this same cause is one of the reasons God allowed this Organisation to be established. We have therefore, so far, assisted financially mission and evangelistic work in Malawi and we will continue doing so when funds permit. Among others, MAU has co-funded the following projects:

  1. XXX
  2. YYYY
  3. BBBB
  4. QQQQ
  5. UUUU
05.

We Support The Underprivilage

Yamikani House Orphanage Centre

With and using the very limited resources the organisation gets, MAU tries and strives to support the underprivileged children at one orphanage centre called Yamikani House, in Blantyre, Malawi. Briefly, the sombre story of Yamikani House is not only heartrending and plaintive, no, but it is equally poignant and melancholic – one that I encourage you to read and act. Please follow the link below.

06.

We Respond to Natural Disaster Appeals

Over the years, Malawians have been victims of serious natural disasters including flooding and pandemics. To these, MAU has on occasions responded financially with the little funds the organisation has managed to solicit. As members of MAU, we have been encouraged by the ancient idiom “Every Little Helps” an old traditional British folk wisdom and proverbial phrase that dates back in print to the 18th century. But, did you know that way before the Brits popularized this phrase, God had already declared and demonstrated that “Little is Much When God is In It”!? [The Boy’s Lunch (John 6:5–13); The Widow’s Oil (2 Kings 4:1–7)]. Read more to learn more via the link below. Besides, why don’t you partner with us to such a worth and good cause? Follow the link below.

“Little is much when God is in it! Labour not for wealth or fame; There’s a crown, and you can win it, If you go in Jesus’ name.”

What we believe in

our fundamental beliefs

MALAWIAN

MAU simply stands for Malawian Adventists in UK. As members of the wide world Adventist Church, we simply subscribe the teachings and believes of the Global Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) Church.

ADVENTISTS

Therefore, our Biblical and Spiritual believes do not simply align with, but fit hand-in-grove with the SDA denomination.

IN UK (MAU)

As Seventh-day Adventists, we accept the Bible as their only creed and hold certain fundamental beliefs to be the teaching of the Holy Scriptures. These beliefs constitute the church’s understanding and expression of the teaching of Scripture. Follow the link below to learn more

MAU ANNUAL GATHERINGS

The Annual Big Sabbaths Gatherings.

A particularly significant feature of the association has been the regular Seventh-day Adventist fellowship gatherings, affectionately known as “Big Sabbath” – which we often refer to as “MAU Day of Fellowship”. These gatherings bring together Adventist members from far and wide across different cities and towns and counties on this British Island; creating an opportunity for worship, fellowship, and cultural connection away from home. More than a routine religious service, Big Sabbath has become a cherished community event where Malawian compatriots reconnect with one another, strengthen their faith, and celebrate their shared heritage.

Big Sabbath is an informal term commonly used by many Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) congregations and fellowship groups to describe a special Sabbath gathering that brings together a larger-than-usual number of believers from multiple local churches, districts, regions, institutions, or cultural communities for worship and fellowship. While the name is not an official term of the global Seventh-day Adventist Church, it is widely recognised in many Adventist communities to denote a significant day of collective worship and spiritual renewal.

What Constitutes Big Sabbath Day Programme.

A Big Sabbath gathering typically includes a full programme of Sabbath School, divine worship, inspirational preaching, Bible study, prayer, congregational singing, special music, testimonies, children’s and youth participation, and fellowship meals. Depending on the context, the programme may also feature health presentations, community outreach initiatives, leadership meetings, cultural performances, mission reports, and recognition of significant milestones within the church community.

What Purpose Does Big Sabbath Day Serve?

The primary purpose of Big Sabbath is to strengthen the spiritual life of believers, foster Christian fellowship, and celebrate the unity of the body of Christ. These gatherings encourage members to deepen their relationship with God, build meaningful relationships with fellow believers, and support one another through worship, encouragement, and shared experiences. They also provide opportunities for mentoring younger members, welcoming newcomers, and reinforcing the mission and values of the Seventh-day Adventist Church.

Big Sabbaths: Dates & Frequency

In the UK, the community of Adventist believers of Malawi heritage (MAU) presently organise Big Sabbath gatherings twice every year – one in summer and the other during winter.  The Summer Big Sabbath is a physical gathering – usually during the month of July, with the Winter being in November or December. This is a virtual meeting via MAU zoom platform.

Did You Know?

Since 2024, MAU started organising Summer Weekend Retreat. Currently, this is planned to be a 2-yearly programme. This year’s Retreat will be at Staverton Park Hotel, Daventry, and promising to be another time to remember!

Big Sabbath in Diaspora

In diaspora communities, such as Malawian Adventists living abroad, Big Sabbath gatherings take on an additional cultural and social significance. They provide a unique space where members can worship together while maintaining their cultural heritage, strengthening community bonds, supporting newcomers, and preserving traditions that connect them with their home country. As such, Big Sabbath serves not only as a religious gathering but also as an important platform for promoting spiritual growth, social cohesion, emotional well-being, and mutual support among Adventist believers.

Did You Know You Can Be a Part

2016 was not just an year-event as usual, it was the year with a special blessings within the MAU Community.

2019 MAU BIG SABBATH

The year 2019 was a defining period in world history. While the  MAU Community had gathered once again during the Big Sabbath celebration, little did we know that this would be the last of the gatherings until ‘God knows when’ as the world would come under the siege the deadly COVID-19 Virus. We sung, we fellowshipped, we celebrated – and yet, COVID-19 was just around the corner.

As Christians eagerly waiting for the return of our LORD Jesus Christ, the year reminded us that indeed, “like a thief in the night, the Lord shall return” to gather His own! Will You Be Ready When The Time Finally Comes?

2023 MAU BIG SABBATH

The 2023 gathering was the first physical post-COVID-19 epidemic event. Battered and bruised by the pandemic, the MAU Community refused to be defeated and stay put for fear of the malady. Members once again to hear the Word of God. The destination was Gospel Oak Sec. Sch. (formerly called The RSA Academy) in Tipton, Birmingham. The Guest Speaker was Pastor  Anthony Gavin  – from Iceland. Pastor Gavin was the Principal Contributor of the Adult Sabbath School Bible Study Guide which was titled “In the Crucible With Christ”. What a joy it was to be once again among the brethren. This reminded many of the song “I love the feeling that I feel when I get together with God’s wonderful people’ – it was indeed wonderful!

A SOLEMN OCCASION

While we cerebrate and laugh, at times we are forced to cry and sob after being robbed of a dear life in death. In 20XX The Wonderful Voices Choir (WVC) had tragically lost one of their member, Sister Beauty Chakanga (may she continue resting in peace till that great resurrection morning).  She was an avid Soprano and had returned Malawi when she met her fate. As a choir we were heartbroken to lose our beloved choir member and that pain is still fresh in many of us. Her voice once lifted us all, and now the silence where the songs she led, including the WVC “Side by Side” version feels immeasurable. We carry her warmth, laughter, and harmony in our hearts, grieving deeply as we hold one another and remember the music they gave us. Until that day, so long!
